La Rubia

“La Rubia” can be seen as a representation of Ochun, and La Caridad Del Cobre but with a twist. She embodies the essence of Ochun, the Orisha of love, beauty, and femininity, but through the appearance of a European, primarily Spanish, looking blonde woman. This juxtaposition is both intriguing and ironic, highlighting the complexities of cultural identity and religious syncretism.

The blonde hair and gold accents in the artwork symbolize Ochun’s association with wealth, prosperity, and beauty, while the aqua color of her earrings connects her to the Virgin of Charity, or La Caridad Del Cobre.

In my LAS CARIDADES collection, I paint the Orishas and Catholic figures from the perspective of the people who have claimed to see them. This European-looking version of La Caridad would be the way a European complexion Cuban would envision her, adding another layer of cultural interpretation to the artwork.

Important to note that La Caridad in this context is a combination of La Caridad Del Cobre and Ochun, not just Ochun. This fusion of deities underscores the interconnectedness of Cuban spiritual beliefs and the rich tapestry of folklore that shapes the cultural landscape.

As a Cuban American artist, I am constantly exploring themes from my heritage and culture, seeking to bridge the gap between the old world and the new. “La Rubia” is a reflection of this journey, a visual representation of the intricate blend of traditions that define the Cuban identity.
